oxford university newspaper

We are the Oxford university newspaper.

We seek to be a disruptive new voice, celebrating individuality and heralding a new direction for student journalism, which has been stagnant for too long.

The Oxford Blue was founded by two undergraduates, Lois Heslop (Lady Margaret Hall), the founding Editor-in-Chief, and Phoebe Hennell (Christ Church), the founding Managing Director of the newspaper. Hennell and Heslop conceived the newspaper during their second year at university, and it started publishing articles in January 2020. The paper received over 250 applications to join the founding editorial team in its first two weeks. Since then, The Blue has moved from strength to strength, winning an SPA Student Journalism award for Best New Publication in 2020; presenting feature coverage of the coronavirus pandemic in 2021; and publishing a hugely-popular Freshers’ Guide at the start of the 2021-22 academic year.

The Blue was founded in response to the closed off and inaccessible culture of Oxford student journalism with the aim of providing opportunities for students to develop their journalistic skills, regardless of background. We seek to be the highest-quality Oxford university newspaper while remaining accessible to all, especially those with no prior experience in journalism. We are a training newspaper, and have a collaborative editing process designed to provide both our Editorial Team and writers with practical journalistic experience. To facilitate this, we run masterclasses with professional journalists, open to all, to allow students to ask any questions about the field and hear from some of the most esteemed writers in the field.

The paper is led by its Senior Editorial and Managerial Team, headed by the Editors-In-Chief and Managing Director. In addition to its local and national reporting, the paper aims to provide perspective beyond the Oxford bubble with a section dedicated to world news. The paper’s BlueLight Investigative Team goes beyond the daily headlines, seeking out and researching stories it considers to be of significance to the student community. The sections on the paper include News, Global Affairs, Opinion, Cultures, Lifestyle, Sports, and Identity. We host a rotating selection of termly Columnists. We have an exceptionally strong Creative Team and have strengths in multimedia journalism, with a photography team and our own Podcast.
